Back Story

I grew up in the 1980s. It was a time when paisley was popular and wallpaper was still used in kitchens. Usually, it had some geese with blue bows around their necks. Then as we moved into the 1990s, wallpaper was frowned upon. Instead people favored painted walls and “less busy” spaces. For many years, wallpaper was the red headed step child nobody embraced. Then a few years ago, wallpaper started making an appearance again.

Sweeney Cottage

One of my favorite homes where wallpaper was used is known as Sweeney Cottage in Leipers Fork Tennessee. I love the wallpaper used in the kitchen!

We have been lucky enough to stay in this cottage several times during our visits to Tennessee.

This particular home, is historic. Holly Williams, a country musician and the daughter of Hank Williams Jr., purchased historic Sweeney Cottage, restored it and now rents it out to guests. In fact, Holly has purchased a number of historic homes and remodeled them. All of her homes are infused with southern style, grace, charm, warmth and character. She excels at mixing vintage and antique items with modern decor.

Wallpaper Revival

The wallpaper revival that has been going on, which has beautiful patterns being routinely incorporated into home decor, had me looking for sources. I want to incorporate some modern -yet old- wallpaper into my home. However, I quickly learned, wallpaper can be incredibly expensive. I was on a quest for wallpaper that is readily available and doesn’t require cashing out my retirement savings. Some wallpapers can easily be upwards of $200 per roll. If you need 5 rolls to complete a room, your project can become expensive, quickly!

With the invention of peel and stick wallpaper, installing wallpaper is easier than ever. No more pasting the back of the paper. No more goopy wallpaper paste on the floor. Peel and stick requires peeling off the backing and it allows you to make adjustments as you apply it to the wall. If you are a renter, peel and stick wallpaper is a great way to add character to your home. When you need to move out, simply unpeel the wallpaper. Similarly, if your tastes in decor change, it’s much easier to remove peel and stick wallpaper and then install a new wallpaper pattern you feel suits your tastes better.

One note about peel and stick wallpaper, it’s much easier to align seams when you are using small patterns. Large murals or floral patterns can be difficult to align precisely.

After spending many hours on Amazon, here are some of my favorite peel and stick wallpaper patterns. Please note, the reviews on these wallpapers vary. So, take the time to read them to ensure it will meet your needs. In addition to using wallpaper on the wall – you can use it to line the shelves in cupboards, on furniture, and even to decorate the interior of a closet.

These wallpapers are more affordable than many other online sources and at the time of writing this post, they are all in stock. You don’t have to wait 6-8 weeks for delivery.

The wallpapers above are more neutral in tone and color. They can be used in just about any room.

Below are some wallpapers with some charming blue and green tones. These would look great in an entry way, kitchen, bedroom or bathroom.

Of course, I had to include some dark and moody wallpapers. These are perfect for a small powder room, library or study. The floral composition with the white background was too cute not to include.
