Handcrafted Society
Welcome to the Handcrafted Society! This is a group of talented bloggers who come together monthly to collectively craft creations using a shared medium or theme. This month’s theme was “garden made beautiful”. We each created something useful or decorative for the garden.
The projects by the Handcrafted Society are fun and inspiring because we see the varied perspectives and interpretations of the theme by each participant. These women are amazingly creative with the ideas they come up with for every theme. Towards the conclusion of this post, you’ll find images and links to the projects made by each blogger. I hope you enjoy browsing through all the ideas these ladies have created. Simply click on the image view their project.
Backstory
It’s July in upstate New York and life doesn’t get much better. The days are full of warm sunshine and the garden is growing. This year I planted zinnias, dahlias, coneflowers, and sunflowers. Every day they all seem to grow several inches. However, this year, I had a particularly difficult guest in the garden. A bunny. Perhaps I should say bunnies. Every time I planted some seedlings, the next morning they would be nibbled down to the ground.
In addition to bunnies, we also have chipmunks, groundhogs, deer and squirrels. In order for my plants to grow, I needed to find a way to give them some protection from the hungry critters. When I looked online to purchase some wire mesh cloches, I was dismayed by the cost. So, I decided to get creative.
Create An Affordable Wire Cloche
While thrifting earlier in the year, I cam across an lampshade being sold for $4. It was my lucky day, because the thrift store advertised 50% off all home items, which meant the lampshade was $2. I thought with a little time and DIY ingenuity, this lampshade would make a great cloche for my fragile plants.

Tip!
Look for lampshades at yard sales, flea markets and thrift stores

Below are the list of supplies needed for this project.
- Lampshade frame (thrifted)
- Chicken wire
- Wire snips
- Landscape staples

Step 1 – Remove Lampshade Fabric
Remove any existing fabric or plastic from the frame of the lampshade.

Step 2 – Cut Chicken Wire
Unroll the chicken wire so you have enough to cover the circumference of the lampshade. Use your wire snips to cut the chicken wire. Gently fold the chicken wire around the base of the lampshade.

Step 3 – Attach Chicken Wire to Lampshade
Trim the chicken wire as you work your way around the lampshade. Attach the loose ends of the chicken wire to the frame of the lampshade.

Tip!
Trim the excess chicken wire at the top of the lampshade for a tapered fit
Step 4 – Cover Plants
Use your affordable wire cloche to cover plants in your garden. Secure the cloche in place with landscape staples.

If desired, you can cover the top of the cloche with chicken wire.

What a great way to repurpose a lampshade. I love that you covered it with chicken wire. So pretty with a great function!
Thank you Missy. It’s such an affordable solution.
Love this idea so much, Anna. My parents have a family of deer that eat all their pretty flowers, so I’m definitely going to pass along this cloche to them. Can’t wait to see how your garden is growing. You made the prettiest bouquets last year, and I know this year they’ll be just as beautiful. Sending you lots of hugs, CoCo
The deer all but devoured my phlox this year. So next year, I will be covering the phlox with these cloches!
I love this project Anna, and can see using a wire cloche indoors just as much as in the garden! Thank you for the clever idea my friend! Pinning!
I hope you find it useful! Thanks for pinning.
Hi Anna! What a fabulous upcycle! I think everything looks prettier with a cloche over it! I have them all over the inside of our home but never thought to use one outdoors! Such a smart idea! And what a bonus to get such a great deal on a thrifted shade! Enjoy your beautiful flowers and the warm weather while you have it!!
Thank you so much Donna. Definitely soaking up all the sunshine while I can.
I absolutely adore this idea, Anna, it’s truly one of my favorites! Not only is it incredibly useful, but it’s just so stinkin’ cute. Now I finally know what to do with all of those lampshades I’ve collected over the years!
I sure hope you’re successful at keeping the critters away. I know just how pesky they can be. Wishing you a beautiful, critter-free garden!
Thank you Wendy! It’s also incredibly effective!
