Welcome to the Handcrafted Society! This is a group of talented bloggers who come together monthly to collectively craft creations using a shared medium or theme. This month’s theme was “leather and lace”. So, each blogger created a project that incorporated these items.

The projects by the Handcrafted Society are fun and inspiring because we see the varied perspectives and interpretations of the theme by each participant. These women are amazingly creative in making projects for each month’s theme. Towards the conclusion of this post, you’ll find images and links to the projects for each blogger. Back Story

Autumn has arrived in upstate New York. The leaves have started turning yellow, orange and red. Fall is such a fleeting season in the northeast. By the end of October, almost all the leaves will be gone. Those that remain will be more of a rust color. This month the weather also changes quickly as temperatures cool down. The day time high temperature may not exceed 60 degrees and the night time lows can be in the low 30s.

Knowing we have only a few weeks remaining to enjoy the outdoors, I love to take advantage of the cool (but not yet cold) weather and eat outside. Inspiration for this project came from wanting to create an autumn tablescape that incorporated leather and lace.

It’s an easy table setting to create and you could certainly create something similar in your own home.

With a little effort and some simple supplies, you can create a magical table setting that is perfect for entertaining outside during the fall.

Supplies

The only supplies you really need for this project are a long piece of lace fabric and a roll of leather cord. You can use any plates, cutlery and napkins you have on hand. For your convenience I have linked online sources where possible.

Create Tablescape

I chose to use the lace as a table runner, not as a table cloth, and placed it down the middle of the table. Upon creating random bunches of fabric, I added the dried hydrangeas to the center of the table and scattered votive candles on either side of the arrangement.

Lace on table

It’s worth noting you can use any remnant piece of lace for this tablescape. Of course, if you have a piece of lace that is extremely old and valuable, then perhaps it’s best not to put it on a table with food. I found the table setting looked best if the lace was long enough to drape over the ends of the table.

Then, using the wooden charger as a base, I placed the white dinner plate and antique brown transferware plate on top. Repeat this for each place setting. For this project, I used antique brown transferware plates because they are synonymous with autumn. However, you can use any pattern or color plates you desire. This setting would also look beautiful with blue transferware plates.

Finally, roll the cutlery into the napkins and tie it with a piece of leather cord. Adjust the place settings as you see fit. If desired, place the napkins with cutlery on top of the plates.
