Handcrafted Society

Welcome to the Handcrafted Society! This is a group of talented bloggers who come together monthly to collectively craft creations using a shared medium or theme. This month’s theme was “music, hymnals, sheet music or records”. Each blogger created a project that incorporated or was made using these elements.

The projects by the Handcrafted Society are fun and inspiring because we see the varied perspectives and interpretations of the theme by each participant. These women are amazingly creative in making projects for each month’s theme. Towards the conclusion of this post, you’ll find images and links to the projects made by each blogger. Back Story

We are in full blown “get ready for Christmas mode”. That means I am inspired to create Christmas related crafts and DIYs. For this month’s HCS project I wanted to make some ornaments to add to our Christmas tree. Every year it is fun to make at least one ornament as a way to remember the year. Then as time passes, and when we decorate the tree each year, it’s nice to recall when each handmade ornament was created. It’s a fun tradition that brings some meaning to our holiday. This year, I decided to make some DIY Angel Wing Ornaments. Good news! These were affordable to make and don’t require many supplies.

DIY Angel Wing Ornaments

I wanted the sheet music paper on the Angel Wings to mimic to the look of feathers. To ensure the paper feathers were placed correctly, I occasionally used tweezers to ensure the “feathers” were straight. However, using tweezers is entirely optional.

Supplies for DIY Angel Wing ornaments

Step 1 – Paint Angel Wing Wooden Cutouts

Apply gold metallic paint to both sides of the wooden Angel Wing cutouts and let them dry on parchment paper or some other nonstick surface. I let mine dry on paper towels which I regretted because portions of the paper towel stuck to the wings as the paint dried.

Step 2 – Cut Sheet Music Strips

Using your scissors, cut a stack of 4-5 pieces of sheet music into 1 inch strips. Then cut 3/4 of the way into each strip to create a series of shingles. Finally, cut the end of each shingle into a “V” shape. This will mimic the tip of a feather. When you are done, the strips of paper will look more like fringe.

To give the feathers more life and to add some dimension to the paper, I curled each strip of paper using the handle of a paint brush.

Step 3 – Attach Paper Feathers to Angel Wings

Starting at the bottom of the Angel Wing cutout, glue a single feather to the bottom of each wing tip. Use your scissors to trim off paper feathers from the strips of sheet music. Continue to add paper feathers, layering them like shingles, to the top of the ornament.

Apply the Elmers glue with a small paint brush as you add each row of paper feathers. If needed, use tweezers to adjust crooked paper feathers.

Step 4- Add Mini Garland

For embellishment, I added some mini star garland to the top of the wings. This is entirely optional. I thought the stars and metallic sparkle complimented the Angel Wings. Cut the garland into 3 inch lengths and wrap around the ornament hook. (As if the Angel is wearing a scarf)

Enjoy Your DIY Angel Wing Ornaments

Once the glue has completed dried, you can hang the ornaments on your Christmas tree. Here are some other ideas on how to use these ornaments this holiday season:

  • As present toppers
  • Make a set and give them as a hostess gift
  • Attach them to a gift basket – such as a wine and cheese basket
  • Make a garland with them
  • Use them as place setting cards at a table
