Back Story

As I have scrolled through social media, I have seen people making these DIY decoupaged clay shapes. They are making everything from trinket dishes to Christmas ornaments. With Valentines Day around the corner, I thought I would make this craft using some old heart shaped cookie cutters. After some trial and error, I found some tips and tricks that made the process easier. So, if you want to make your own DIY decoupaged clay hearts, read on for my version of the tutorial.

Supplies

As with any craft project, the first order of business is gathering our supplies. Most of these supplies are available at your local craft store or big box store. I provided links to online supplies, where possible.

Step 1: Preparatory Work

Cover your work surface and set out the baking sheets. Set out the clay, rolling pin, and cookie cutters on your work surface. Separate the multiple layers of paper in your decorative napkins. Ensure you only have the single ply decorative layer.

Step 2: Create Hearts

Work clay in your hands until warm and integrated. Then using the rolling pin, roll out the clay to 1/4 inch thickness. Using a craft brush, apply mod podge to the top of the clay. Lay the single ply decorative napkin on top of the clay.

Using the heart shaped cookie cutters, cut out heart shapes in the clay. Pull the clay away from around the cookie cutter.

Once the clay heart has been placed on the baking sheet, apply a top coat of mod podge.

Repeat this process with different decorative napkin patterns. Use a straw or skewer to make a hole in the top of each heart.

Lay the clay hearts on a baking sheet to dry. The clay should be dry after 2 days. Turn the clay hearts every 6-12 hours over to ensure both sides dry evenly.

If you want the clay hearts to dry faster, place them in an oven set at 150 degrees (or the lowest possible setting) for 2 hours. Flip the clay hearts half way through to ensure the clay dries evenly.

Step 3: Final Touches

Once your clay hearts are dry, you may want to add some final decorative touches. I decided to paint the back of the clay hearts using acrylic paint. It took 2-3 coats of paint until I was satisfied with the coverage.

I also decided to add glitter around the edges of the clay hearts. Using a craft brush and some Mod Podge, apply glue to the edges of the clay hearts then dip the edges into glitter.

For a final touch, add ribbon through the hole at the top of the clay heart.

The ribbons used to hang each clay heart were of varying length so the hearts could be layered.

It was fun to mix and match the different napkin patterns to create a “clay heart bouquet”.
