Back Story

One of the most frequent requests I receive from you is asking how to simplify holiday decor. While it can be fun going “all out” in terms of decor for the holiday, putting away all the decor at the end of the Christmas season can be overwhelming.  Most people don’t want to have bins and bins of Christmas decor that need to be sorted and stored every year.  I get it.  Christmas decor should be fun, easy to put up and even easier to pack away.  This year I am focusing on sharing tips on how to use fun, festive, affordable, easy decor that can be easily packed away at the end of the season.

Today I am sharing some ideas on how to decorate your coffee or tea station (or hot chocolate bar) for the Christmas season. It’s a fun way to get into the holiday spirit and make your guests feel welcome. So, without further delay, let’s begin.

The Basics

You can’t have a coffee or hot chocolate bar without some basics.  I have a Keurig coffee maker but any type of coffee machine (or espresso maker) is the most important component of any coffee station. In preparation for having guests, it is a good idea to have a selection of some favorite coffees, including some decaf options. In addition to cream and sugar, you may want to include the following at your beverage station:

  • Hot cocoa packets
  • Small marshmallows
  • Cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon
  • Peppermint sticks
  • Spoons or stirrers
  • Napkins

Of course, having a set of mugs is also a good idea.  All of my every day mugs are from the dollar tree.

Garland

First, do NOT use any type of greenery garland.  While it does look beautiful, it can bulky to store, challenging to put up and time consuming to put away.  There are hooks that need to be attached to shelves and then alot of fluffing of garland to ensure it is evenly distributed.  Also, some garlands can “shed” their needles.

If you are looking for easy and simple Christmas decor for your coffee station, my advice is to skip the garland.

Village of Paper Homes

This year, to keep my holiday coffee station festive yet simple, I opted to put up a little village of paper homes which I purchased from Target.  This was a fun way to incorporate some whimsy into my kitchen decor.

The larger buildings light up with a small battery. These homes come with a battery and include a 6 hour timer.  The smaller houses are actually ornaments.

The little houses look positively magical, when lit up, in the kitchen during the evening.

These cute paper houses cost $3 for the smaller ones and $5 for the larger ones with the lights. It’s simply a matter of putting them out, enjoying them and packing them away at the end of the season.

I love the cheerful color palette of these little homes.

The architectural features of these homes remind me of the buildings Mr. SLH and I saw in Amsterdam this past April.

Santa Mugs

At the risk of stating the obvious, you can also use vintage or new Santa mugs to decorate your coffee station.  Below is a photo from several years ago.

Vintage Santa Mugs

Being able to use the mugs to your drink your Christmas coffee & hot chocolate is an added bonus.  You don’t need dozens of Santa mugs to make a statement. These are also easy to pack up at the end of the season and don’t take up much space.

Jadeite

Christmas is the perfect time to bring out the jadeite.  This popular collectible is the perfect color green to celebrate the holiday season.  If you collect jadeite or if you have a few pieces, it’s a great way to bring some holiday cheer to your coffee station. Below is a photo from last year.

You can see Santa mugs were also mixed in with the jadeite.

Other Ideas

In addition to these ideas, here are some other items you can use to bring a little Christmas cheer to your coffee station using items you may already own:

  • Display some colorful enamelware
  • Showcase some festive kitchen towels
  • Add some vintage paper mache Santa candy containers
  • Display some vintage red or green wooden handled kitchen utensils
  • Tuck in little bits of fresh evergreens into small bottles or vases
  • Add bottle brush Christmas trees into areas on the shelves
  • Put some candy canes into a clear containers or into a coffee mug
  • Display red transferware dishes
  • Adorn your station with a small wreath
  • Tie red gingham ribbon onto the handles of your coffee mugs

In Closing  . . .

While I love to celebrate Christmas, I try to keep the decor fairly simple, affordable and easy.   In general, it should be easy to put out, easy to display and easy to pack away at the end of the season. Finally, incorporating items you already own helps to save money.   Have fun decorating your Christmas coffee bar this holiday season!

  2. Adorable, Anna!! Such a cute and clever idea to use those paper houses!! Also, I’m totally using my (small) jadeite collection for Christmas this year…I recently saw it used in a magazine with brown velvet ribbon and I was smitten 🙂
Thanks for sharing this super easy idea!

  3. Love, love, love this coffee and cocoa bar set up, Anna! Not only is it wildly cute and creative I’m thankful that it’s easy to replicate in our own homes too. There is still a lot of clean up going on from all the hurricanes down here and it’s been hard to get into the spirit of the season at times. So many of us still have holes in our roofs and a lot of our holiday decor was either damaged or got washed away. Thanks for giving us a budget friendly way to celebrate that feels festive but not overwhelming. We need it! Big hugs, CoCo
