Back Story

Lately, on social media, I have been seeing clay pot wreaths made out of small terra cotta clay pots.  They look so charming and I was inspired to make one of my own.  There were a few things I did differently with the wreath I made.  Also, I learned a few key tips, which I will share with you.  Creating this terra cotta clay pot wreath was surprisingly easy and the assembly took less than an hour.  As someone who loves to garden and who loves to grow flowers, this wreath was the perfect way to celebrate summer and warmer weather.  You could also use this as a spring wreath or fall wreath.

I already had most of the supplies for this wreath in my home.  However, you can get the supplies at any local craft store such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels.  You can also purchase the supplies at a big box stores like Walmart.   Where possible, I have provided links to online sources.

Create Patina on the Terra Cotta Pots

The first step I took was a little different than the other wreath instructions I read.  I like the muted color of aged terra cotta pots and wanted to knock down the “orange” hue on the pots.

Using a plastic container, I filled it with equal parts white paint and water. Then I fully submerged each clay pot into the paint solution, placing them upside down on a piece of cardboard to dry.  When creating the wreath, I learned it’s better to a have a variety of sizes of pots.  Although all the clay pots were small in size- the larger pots were 4 inches tall, the medium sized pots were 3 inches tall and the smallest pots were only 2 inches tall.

Layout Wreath Design

Initially I tried to create the wreath using a wire wreath form.  It was a failure.  The clay pots were too heavy for the wire wreath form and would not stay in place.  So my biggest TIP is to use a grapevine wreath form.  They are sturdy enough to handle the weight of the pots and have a large enough surface area for the clay pots to stay in place.

Lay out the pots in a pattern you like around the grapevine wreath.  I alternated the direction of the pots with some facing inward and others facing outward.  Use the smallest sized clay pots to fill in any blank areas on the wreath form.

Attach the Terra Cotta Clay Pots

For the next step, we are going to attach the clay pots to the wreath form using jute twine.  Here is another TIP.  When attaching the clay pots to the wreath, use TWO pieces of jute twine.  If one piece of twine breaks, the other piece will keep the pot from falling off the wreath and breaking.  (No need to ask how I learned this).  I cut each piece of twine about 12 inches in length.   Push the two pieces of twine through the small drainage hole in each pot and tie the pot to the grapevine wreath.

Add Dried Hydrangeas

I had some dried hydrangeas from last year.  So, I decided to tuck in some dried flower heads in various places around the grapevine wreath.  I even tucked some small pieces into the terra cotta clay pots.  You can use any faux flower you like or any other dried flower.  You can also secure the flowers to the wreath using a hot glue gun.
