Back Story

If you have visited this site before, you know collecting vintage and antique items is one of my passions. For many years, I was a dealer who sold vintage and antique items. Mostly those associated with a cottage/farmhouse/country style and items with a European influence. Over the years, I have been sharing my knowledge with you on what to look for when collecting various antique and vintage items.

Many of you ask how I incorporate the items I collect into my home. This is an excellent question. While I do love to collect various things, I do not like a cluttered home. I prefer clear surfaces and don’t like items to gather dust. As a result, I routinely shuffle my collections based on seasons and holidays. Downstairs in our basement, there are a number of clear plastic bins filled with various vintage and antique collections. I like to think of myself as a maximalist trying to disguise myself as a minimalist.

Today, with help from Mr. SLH (who has the patience of a Saint) we are giving you our Holiday Home Tour showing you how to integrate vintage and antique collectibles into your decor. Most notably, we are going to cover the following vintage Christmas collectibles:

  • Mercury glass ornaments
  • Paper mache holiday decor
  • Felt stockings
  • Santa mugs
  • Putz houses

Without further delay, let’s jump into our Vintage Inspired Holiday Home Tour.

Vintage Inspired Holiday Home Tour

During our holiday home tour, we are visiting three different areas of the home. First the living room, second the dining room and third the kitchen. Additionally, we are sharing a small space decorated in a hallway.

Living Room

We live in an open concept home, so our living room, dining room and kitchen are all one big open space. First, let’s peek into the living room.

Christmas Tree

Vintage inspired holiday home tour

This is the third year we have used our King of Christmas flocked tree and we could not be happier with it. It’s easy to assemble and to put away. I think it makes a perfect background for our vintage mercury glass ornaments.

Because we are integrating vintage collectibles into our Christmas decor, we decided to use vintage mercury glass ornaments to decorate the tree.

For the past twenty years, I have been slowly collecting vintage mercury glass ornaments. The majority of these ornaments are from the 1950s or earlier. If you want to learn more about how to identify them and where to find them, I wrote a post about them here.

If you prefer a instant collection, I also rounded up some recent reproduction mercury glass ornaments.

We also decided to add some tinsel to the tree.

In keeping with the viniage theme, we used a vintage quilt for a Christmas tree skirt.

Postal Stand

Antique postal stand with antique rocking horse

Mr. SLH likes to collect antique and vintage post office items because his father was a postman. The postal stand is from the mid 1800s and from a post office in Vermont. It’s the perfect place for our antique rocking horse.

The rocking horse was adorned with some ribbon and fresh sprigs of pine.

Sofa and Chair

We tend to keep our furniture neutral and prefer couches and chairs with slipcovers because we have two dogs. (Who are often on the furniture) I like to be able to wash everything in the laundry. The Christmas tree pillow is an Amazon find. They are 20″x20″ and are sold as a set of two for less than $20.

The fuzzy cream Christmas tree pillow is also an Amazon find. They are 18″x18″ and are also sold as a set of two for less than $20.

Dining Room

The focal point of our dining room is our table and stepback cupboard. The stepback cupboard is an antique from City Farmhouse that we purchased in Franklin Tennessee several years ago.

Our table is decorated simply with a small gold tree in an antique ironstone tureen. The little tree is held in place with some gold stone fruit and resin figs purchased from Amazon.

Stepback Cupboard

The top of the cupboard is decorated with a mix of new and vintage honeycomb decor. The gold bell is vintage while the trees are from Target.

The wreath is from King of Christmas and has a battery pack hidden in the back. The lights are on a 6 hour timer so they turn on and off automatically. I love that I can hang this wreath anywhere and not worry about having an electrical outlet nearby.

These little clip on candles are a DIY ornament I made recently. A tutorial on how to make them is coming your way soon!

Plate Rack

Next to the stepback cupboard, we have a plate rack which is a vintage find from when I lived in Delaware.

The top of the plate rack is decorated with vintage mercury glass garland and three vintage paper mache bells. The two paper mache bells on either end are a DIY I made last year.

The red felt stockings are vintage and are something I still try to collect. Here is a post on popular vintage Christmas collectibles.

Kitchen

The open shelving above our coffee station in the kitchen houses our collection of vintage Santa mugs. These are definitely becoming more collectible and more difficult to find at a reasonable price. When I first started collecting them about ten years ago, I would find them for $5 a piece at an outdoor flea market in Maine. I rounded up some vintage Santa mugs for sale on Etsy.

I like to mix in some newer Santa mugs on the bottom shelf that can actually be used for coffee. Life is too short not to drink your morning coffee out of a Santa mug!

If you want to learn more about collecting vintage Santa mugs, I wrote a post about how to determine their age and authenticity here.

The large paper mache Santa face was a recent find this past summer. Mr. SLH spotted it for me at an outdoor antique market.

The dealer indicated the paper mache Santa was made in the 1940s. Of course, I couldn’t resist a Santa with glitter in his beard and on his hat.

Hallway

Lastly, in our hallway, we have a little corner cabinet filled with putz houses.

These sweet little cardboard houses were made prior to 1940. They are all marked “Japan” on the bottom.

I added some small Christmas baubles for a little sparkle.

This post has more information on finding and identifying vintage putz houses.
