Back Story

All things with small floral prints, stripes and gingham have made a big comeback in the world of interior design. The cottagecore aesthetic is influencing all aspects of design including, wallpaper, bedding, kitchen appliances and furniture. Cottagecore style embraces rural lifestyles with a focus on nature, nostalgia and a warm cozy environment.

As such, I was inspired to make some cottagecore style magnets using a silicone mold of a rabbit and some air dry clay. These magnets are a charming addition to our kitchen and coordinate with all the other cottagecore items in our home. Here are step by step instructions for making these charming magnets.

With the exception of the silicone rabbit mold, these supplies are available at your local craft store or big box store.

Silicone mold of a rabbit

Where possible, I have provided links to online sources.

Step 1: Make Clay Rabbits

Knead a generous size of air dry clay in your hands until it is warm and soft. Firmly press the clay into the silicone mold ensuring all areas of the mold are covered. TIP: If the clay sticks to the interior of the silicone mold, apply a small amount of nonstick cooking spray to the mold’s imprint prior to pressing in the clay.

Rabbit Magnets Tip 1

Carefully removed the silicone mold to reveal the clay rabbit. Repeat this process as many times as needed until you have enough rabbits for the number of magnets you want to create.

Place all the clay rabbits on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.

Using a small knife, carefully remove any excess clay surrounding the rabbits. Remove as much clay as possible but if there is some still remaining – that’s okay. We will fix it in step 5. Let the clay dry for several days while flipping over the rabbits every other day to ensure even drying.

Step 2: Cut Foam Board

Using the silicone mold as a guide, cut the foam board into blocks. Be sure to cut the foam board on a cutting mat to avoid damaging your work surface. To ensure you have straight clean cuts through the foam board, use a box cutter and straight edge ruler.

Cutting the foam board to size

TIP: If the edges of your foam board are rough or uneven, sand them using 220 grit sandpaper.

Step 3: Create Paper Backing

Next, cut your cottagecore inspired paper to the size of your foam board blocks. Again, use the cutting mat, straight edge ruler and box cutter to ensure a clean fit to the foam board.

TIP: you can use any variety of cottagecore inspired paper. I used a combination of vintage wallpaper and wrapping paper.

Apply rubber cement glue to the one side of the foam board block to adhere the paper. Use the box cutter to trim off any excess paper.

TIP: Using rubber cement glue ensures the paper will lay flat on the foam board without any wrinkles.

Step 5: Paint Dried Clay Rabbits

Once your clay rabbits are completely dry, use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the edges around the rabbit. Remove any extra bits of clay that remaining after cutting away the excess clay in Step 1. Carefully sand around the paws, tail and ears. Take your time with this process.

Once your rabbits are completely sanded, use a small craft brush to apply Rub n Buff. I chose the color antique gold but a wide array of metallic colors are available.

Step 6: Assemble Magnets

Plug in your hot glue gun and use it to attach the clay rabbit to the front of the foam board covered with your cottagecore inspired paper. Then glue the magnets to the back of the foam board.

Adding magnets to the back of the foam board

I added 3 magnets to the back of each block of foam board.
